Hakone is another popular and pleasant tourist spot that has beautiful Lake Ashi with noble Mount Fuji view, great Onsen hot springs, famous Hakone Shrine, many interesting museums and gardens. It takes 90 minutes either from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo by Odakyu line’s Hakone Romance Car Express train to Hakone Yumoto Station, or from Tokyo Station by JR Express line and change at Odawara Station to Hakone Yumoto Station. It’s an easy access!
There are some rides you can enjoy. Get Hakone Free Pass to enjoy most of the rides below including local bus services.
Hakone Tozan Railway – From Hakone Yumoto Station, you better take this small railway to go deeper into Hakone. You can also change to Tozan Cable Car and Hakone Ropeway from Gora Station.
- Gora – Gora can offer you many Japanese style retreats with Onsen hot spring.
- Hakone Museum – Hop off at Koen-Kami Station to enjoy the beautiful garden at this museum.
- Hakone Open-Air Museum – Interested in a unique outdoor museum? Hakone Open-Air Museum is also on Tozan Railway route at Chokokuno Mori Station.
- Owakudani – Owakudani is the area of volcanic holes with its infamous smell of hydrogen sulfide and white smoke covering the area. You can also enjoy the scenery around here. This will be something different to experience for sure!
Komagatake Ropeway – This connects from Lake Ashi to the top of Komagatake Mountain, where you can have a wonderful view of Mount Fuji. You will enjoy the nature with different flowers on the top of this mountain. (This ride is not included in Hakone Free Pass.)
Lake Ashi Boat Cruise – Well, what more can we say? Just enjoy the lake cruise with refreshing mountains views with Mount Fuji!
Sengokuhara is famous as the vast field of Japanese pampas grass. This highland area is totally covered by never ending pampas grass and it becomes a golden field during autumn; from the end of September to the end of October. You need to catch Hakone Tozan Bus either from Gora Station or Hakone Yumoto Station to get here.
Venetian Glass Museum (Garasuno Mori Museum) is another popular museum in Hakone. Beautiful Venetian glasses in a beautiful nature setting. For details please visit official site.

I love Hakone, it’s definitely my favorite place to go for a day trip from Tokyo. I especially love riding the ropeway, eating the eggs at Owakudani, and riding the pirate ship across Lake Ashi.
