Kobe
Kobe is the 6th biggest city in Japan with over 1.5 million population. It’s about 3 hours from Tokyo or 30 minutes from Kyoto by Shinkansen Bullet Train. A little change of a scenery from all the temples and the shrines, it is an international port city with beautiful views, especially famous for its illuminations at night by harbour side. As you walk around the city centre Sannomiya, you may notice the different vibe from people and the shops from the one in Tokyo. Kobe is somewhat more colourful and energetic.
Kobe has been one of the biggest international trading ports in the world since its opening in 1868 however when this area has been hit by a shockingly massive earthquake back in 1995, it triggered the declining with many industries. The city has gradually been reconstructed in past years and it is now completely recovered.
For nature lovers, it would be a nice way to spend a day at Mount Rokko. They have ropeways and cable cars to access to the top of the mountain without any hassle and you can enjoy a pleasant view as you go up the hill.
For food lovers, you’ve got to try the world famous Kobe Beef! It is one of Wagyu Beef called Tajima Beef and only the highest grade of Tajima Beef is classified as Kobe Beef. Kobe Beef is very well marbled therefore extremely tender. They say the cows are fed beer sometimes and even receive some massage to get the quality tender meat!
Harborland is the place to go for shopping as well as enjoying the night time illuminated starry views with harbour.
Himeji Castle
Himeji Town is about 30 minutes away to the west from Kobe by JR Line. Himeji Castle was built in 1333 and it is a national treasure and a world heritage as well. It is an easy 10 minute walk from Himeji Station.
There are two main towers (6 story tower and 3 story tower) connected with each other. This castle is simply magnificent from every angle.
The architecture around the tower is also fairly impressive. You can go inside the castle (you have to change your shoes to the slippers they provide to you!) and look down the wonderful view from the top. Please note the main tower is currently being renovated therefore the limited admission inside. (due to complete around March 2015)
